SALT LAKE CITY — A total of 81 athletes with connections to Utah are set to compete in the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics, which will take place in Milan and Cortina, Italy. This announcement follows the release of Team USA’s final roster, consisting of 232 athletes, nearly one-third of whom have ties to the Beehive State.
The significant representation of Utah athletes underscores the state’s growing impact on the international Olympic arena. According to Jeff Robbins, president and CEO of the Utah Sports Commission, this achievement reflects years of strategic investment and development in sports facilities and training programs.
Growth of Utah’s Olympic Legacy
Utah’s journey toward becoming a hub for winter sports began with the 2002 Winter Olympics, which established a strong foundation for the state’s sports culture. Robbins noted, “Going back from before 2002, when we really didn’t have many athletes here, to where we are now, it has been a remarkable evolution for the state.”
The state now boasts world-class venues and year-round training opportunities. National governing bodies such as U.S. Ski and Snowboard, U.S. Speedskating, U.S. Biathlon, and USA Climbing have made Utah their home, further enhancing the state’s reputation in winter sports. Robbins emphasized that the community’s commitment and investment have been crucial for this success.
Notable Athletes Headed to Italy
Among the athletes representing Utah is Nick Page, a freestyle mogul skier from Park City. This will mark Page’s second appearance at the Olympics. Reflecting on his experience, he stated, “You see this pool behind us? I have basically lived here since I started when I was 7 years old. We’re really so lucky to have this right at our fingertips.”
The roster includes 36 athletes making their Olympic debut, showcasing a mix of emerging talent and seasoned competitors. Notably, four Olympic champions and 14 Olympic medalists are part of the group connected to Utah, highlighting the state’s depth in talent.
Page expressed pride in being part of both Team Utah and Team USA, adding, “It’s been like that for so many different athletes in Park City and in Utah. We’re fortunate here.”
As the 2026 Winter Olympics draw closer, the anticipation builds for athletes and fans alike, with the Opening Ceremony scheduled for February 6, 2026. With Utah’s strong representation, the state’s influence on the global sporting stage is set to continue, showcasing the dedication and skill of its athletes.
