NYC Nurses Strike Continues as Hospitals Agree on Health Benefits

The ongoing strike involving nurses in New York City has seen a significant development, as hospitals have reached an agreement to maintain health care benefits for the striking nurses. The New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) announced on December 10, 2023, that this agreement represents a critical advancement in their negotiations with several major hospitals, including Montefiore, Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Morningside, and NewYork-Presbyterian.

NYSNA’s statement highlighted that the deal clears “a major hurdle” in the ongoing discussions. The union emphasized that the maintenance of the current high-quality NYSNA Plan A health coverage without cuts is a significant victory for the frontline nurses and their families. Despite this progress, the hospitals and NYSNA still need to finalize tentative contract agreements.

As the negotiations continue, the NYSNA reaffirmed its commitment to bargaining in good faith on other priority issues, including pay increases, enhanced staffing, and better workplace safety protections. The nurses expressed their readiness to return to the bargaining table as soon as mediators call for further discussions.

While the hospitals have not yet released public statements regarding the agreement on health benefits, the situation remains tense. The 15,000 nurses currently on strike have been vocal about their demands for improved pay and working conditions. Hospital representatives have characterized these demands as unreasonable, contributing to the ongoing stalemate.

The nurses returned to negotiations on December 7, 2023, marking the 11th day of the strike. Despite the ongoing discussions, no agreement was reached at that time. The NYSNA has stated that the nurses will continue to strike “until we reach full tentative contract agreements that protect patient and nurse safety.” Following a recent heavy snowstorm, picketing activities are set to resume on Tuesday, reflecting the nurses’ determination to advocate for their rights.

This strike highlights the critical issues surrounding healthcare workers’ rights and wellbeing in an industry that has faced immense pressure, particularly during the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. As negotiations proceed, the focus remains on achieving fair contracts that ensure the safety and welfare of both nurses and patients.
