Firelands Falcons Surge Past Keystone, Claim LC8 Basketball Lead

The Firelands Falcons delivered a commanding performance on January 24, 2026, defeating the Keystone Wildcats 57-40 to seize first place in the Lorain County League (LC8). Under the guidance of Coach Onyx Lopez, the Falcons demonstrated their peak form, effectively controlling the match from start to finish.

With this victory, Firelands improved its record to 13-5, including an impressive 11-1 in conference play. The win against the defending LC8 champions was crucial, as it positions the Falcons on the brink of securing a conference title share for the first time since the 2021-22 season. Firelands only needs one more victory in their upcoming matches against Brookside on January 28 and Clearview on February 4 to clinch an outright championship.

Lopez expressed her pride in the team’s performance, stating, “We are playing some of our best basketball at the perfect time. As a team, we have all bought into our roles and identified what they are. It can be anybody’s night.” This collective effort is underscored by the team’s resilience since their earlier loss to Keystone, which Lopez noted served as a turning point.

Defensive Dominance and Teamwork

The foundation of Firelands’ success was their strong defensive play. The Falcons initiated the game with a 7-0 run, forcing five turnovers from Keystone in the first quarter. By the end of the first half, Firelands had established a 16-9 lead and continued to expand their advantage.

“Defense is our identity, and we work on it a lot,” stated Addison Schrader, a key guard for Firelands. The Falcons out-rebounded Keystone 35-24 overall, dominating in both offensive and defensive rebounds. This relentless effort on the boards was a significant factor in their victory.

Despite the efforts of Keystone’s All-Ohio point guard, Madyson Sokolowski, who scored 24 points, the Wildcats struggled to find scoring opportunities. Their shooting droughts of nearly seven minutes in both the second and third quarters hampered their chances. Coach Rocky Houston acknowledged his team’s shortcomings, noting that Firelands was consistently one step ahead in tracking down loose balls.

Offensive Firepower and Future Prospects

Offensively, Firelands displayed impressive shooting, with players like Addison Schrader contributing 21 points, while Dilynn Copley and Stella Frederick added nine and eight points, respectively. The Falcons capitalized on Keystone’s defensive adjustments, effectively countering a zone defense that the Wildcats employed.

Lopez emphasized the significance of this victory, especially considering it was the first time Firelands defeated Keystone and Columbia during her coaching tenure. “We really bought into our goals after we lost to Keystone the first time,” she remarked. “I cannot speak enough about the chemistry of our team.”

Looking ahead, Keystone, now at 16-2 with a 10-2 conference record, aims to finish the regular season strong. Houston expressed optimism for the future as his team, predominantly made up of underclassmen, prepares for upcoming matches against Wellington, Padua, and Brookside.

The outcome not only highlights Firelands’ ascendancy in the league but also sets the stage for an exciting conclusion to the LC8 season. With their sights set on the championship, the Falcons’ momentum is palpable as they continue their pursuit of success on the court.
