Nonprofit Launches Affordable Housing Expansion in Tucson

A Tucson-based nonprofit organization, Blessings Through Action, has commenced construction on two new buildings aimed at expanding affordable housing options in the area. This initiative will enhance the organization’s existing portfolio, which currently includes 18 fully renovated homes and condominiums rented to individuals on fixed incomes, including disabled persons, veterans, and those receiving Social Security benefits.

The new buildings are being developed near the intersection of Glenn and Country Club, adjacent to an established condominium complex owned by the nonprofit. The project will feature a communal space designed for events, along with a four-bedroom transitional housing unit. This unit will include separate entrances and a shared central area, intended for visiting relatives or individuals preparing to transition into permanent housing.

Elaine Beck, the founder of Blessings Through Action, emphasizes the organization’s commitment to affordability. The nonprofit maintains a policy of never charging more than half of a renter’s income, capping monthly rent at $700. This approach enables families to manage their living expenses while ensuring the sustainability of the housing program.

“My goal is to help others in ways that I knew I could have used help,” Beck stated. “One of them was housing, and another was just showing people love and letting them know how important they are. No one deserves to be left out in the cold or hurting.”

The organization currently has a few open units available, although it has specific eligibility requirements. Prospective tenants must be on a fixed income to qualify for assistance. Individuals interested in applying for housing can find more information and submit their applications through the nonprofit’s website.

As Tucson continues to grapple with housing affordability challenges, initiatives like those from Blessings Through Action are crucial in providing support for vulnerable populations. The expansion of affordable housing not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters a sense of community and belonging for those who often feel overlooked.
