Three original paintings by the beloved television artist Bob Ross will be auctioned in Marlborough, Massachusetts, on January 27, 2024, to benefit public media. The artworks, titled “Change of Seasons,” “Babbling Brook,” and “Valley View,” showcase Ross’s signature depictions of tranquil nature scenes featuring his iconic “happy little trees.”
The auction, organized by Bonhams Skinner, marks the first public exhibition of these pieces since they were painted during episodes of “The Joy of Painting.” Joan Kowalski, CEO of Bob Ross Inc. and daughter of Ross’s business partners, spearheaded the initiative as a way to honor her father’s legacy while supporting public television.
Kowalski noted the success of previous auctions, stating that private collectors often receive bids that exceed expectations. “Bob was very devoted to public television,” she emphasized, adding that he would have appreciated this opportunity to support the medium he cherished.
The auction house appraises the paintings to fetch between $25,000 and $60,000 each, with “Change of Seasons” anticipated to draw the highest bids. Robin Starr, vice president and general manager of Bonhams Skinner, indicated strong interest in the pieces, suggesting they could sell for even more than expected. “Auction people are a little like baseball people, so we don’t want to jinx things by saying what we think they’re going to do,” Starr remarked, hinting at the excitement surrounding the auction.
The proceeds from this auction will also have a significant impact on public media. Judy Barlow, vice president of growth at American Public Television, shared that the funds from a previous auction allowed them to waive licensing fees for stations across the country for an entire year. This support is crucial for many public television stations, especially after federal funding cuts. Barlow expressed her astonishment at the impact of the prior auction, stating, “It was such a meaningful contribution.”
The paintings will be available for preview at the Bonhams Skinner showroom starting Thursday, with free public viewings offered. Starr encouraged art enthusiasts to take advantage of this opportunity to experience the works up close, highlighting the unique textures and colors Ross employed in his creations.
Bidding will commence at noon on January 27, with options for interested buyers to bid in person, online, or via telephone with a Bonhams representative. This auction not only provides a chance for collectors to own a piece of television history but also supports the ongoing efforts of public media to deliver educational content and community programming.
For many fans of Bob Ross, this auction represents a rare opportunity to acquire original works from an artist whose calming presence and artistic philosophy continue to inspire audiences worldwide.
