Blind Massage Therapist Gives Back to Single Parents NOW

UPDATE: Blind massage therapist Steven Stewart is making headlines in Orland Park as he announces an incredible initiative to provide free massages to five single parents in need. This effort comes just as local families grapple with the fallout from recent government assistance cuts, making Stewart’s mission even more vital.

Stewart, who lost his sight eight years ago, opened Unsighted Massage in September 2025, located inside Nicole Richards Hair Salon. His journey from a forklift driver to a compassionate healer has transformed his life, and now he aims to uplift others in similar situations. “I’m in a better place now than I was back then — physically, emotionally, mentally,” Stewart shared, expressing his gratitude for the support he received growing up.

Motivated by the struggles of single parents, Stewart’s initiative was sparked by a troubling report that as many as 2 million Illinoisans lost their SNAP benefits during a federal government shutdown. “I was moved by stories of families struggling to afford food and other necessities,” he said. His personal connection to single parents drives him to give back, especially to those who, like his mother, have sacrificed much for their children.

The first massage giveaway will be promoted on social media, where single parents can enter for a chance to receive one of the five free sessions. “A lot of my overhead is my time and my hands, and I don’t mind giving that to people,” Stewart emphasized. This heartfelt endeavor has already sparked unexpected community support, including local resident Tracy Beagarie, who plans to donate charcuterie boards to accompany the massages.

Beagarie, inspired by Stewart’s mission, remarked, “You don’t always need the recognition for doing nice things.” Her involvement highlights the community spirit that Stewart’s initiative has ignited, showing how a simple act of kindness can ripple outward.

As Stewart prepares for this giveaway, he noted the emotional impact of his work. “I had one client who broke down in tears just because of how bad she was struggling,” he recalled. His sensitivity to the challenges faced by his clients reinforces the importance of his mission. However, he urges only single parents to sign up, as some individuals have misrepresented their situations.

Support for Stewart’s mission also comes from Mary Lynn Fleck, owner of Nicole Richards Salon, who has benefited from Stewart’s massage therapy during her battle with breast cancer. “It was the best night’s sleep I got throughout my whole chemo treatment,” Fleck shared, praising Stewart’s dedication and skill. She believes his commitment to helping others while building his business is commendable.

With this initiative, Stewart is not just providing a service; he is fostering a supportive community environment. His work at Unsighted Massage has already touched more than the planned recipients, and he is committed to helping as many single parents as possible.

Stewart’s story serves as a powerful reminder of resilience and compassion. As he looks to the future, his focus remains on giving back to those who need it most. The first massage giveaway is set for November 2023, and the community is rallying behind this inspiring cause.
