Meriden Man Convicted of Kidnapping and Robbery Over Sneakers

UPDATE: A Meriden man has been convicted of kidnapping, robbery, and strangulation in a shocking incident stemming from a sneaker sale. On March 25, 24-year-old Addison Clegg is set to be sentenced after a New Britain Superior Court jury found him guilty of multiple felonies, including first-degree kidnapping and robbery.

The crime unfolded during a Facebook Marketplace transaction, where Clegg reportedly “strangled the victim to the point of unconsciousness.” This allowed an accomplice to steal the victim’s legally registered 9mm firearm and vehicle. The victim, who regained consciousness while being driven away, managed to escape on Cromwell Avenue in Rocky Hill, suffering serious injuries, including a broken foot.

Authorities from the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice expressed deep concern over the violent nature of the crime. “The victim’s courage cannot be understated,” stated Senior Assistant State’s Attorney David Clifton and Inspector Edward Apicella, who successfully prosecuted the case. “But for his quick thinking under terrifying conditions, who knows how this violent encounter would have ended?”

The incident has raised alarms about public safety during transactions arranged online. New Britain State’s Attorney Christian M. Watson praised the diligent work of the Rocky Hill and Middletown police departments, specifically highlighting Detectives Patrick Lehane, Thomas Ganley, and Officer Brandon Caires for their investigative efforts. He also acknowledged the medical intervention provided by Hartford Hospital and the support from the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection-Division of Scientific Services.

As the community grapples with the implications of this violent crime, residents are urged to exercise caution during online transactions. The upcoming sentencing of Addison Clegg will serve as a critical reminder of the potential dangers lurking in everyday activities.
