Vallejo’s Donna Bettencourt Named 49ers’ Fan of the Year

Donna Bettencourt, a dedicated supporter of the San Francisco 49ers, has been recognized as the team’s Fan of the Year for 2025. The announcement came during a home game against the Atlanta Falcons in October 2023, where Bettencourt was surprised with a special jersey and jacket celebrating her passion for the team. At 76 years old, she embodies the spirit of the 49ers community and will represent the franchise at the Super Bowl if they advance.

A Passion for Team Spirit

Living in Vallejo, Bettencourt has an extensive collection of approximately a dozen 49ers jerseys, but she intentionally avoids those with player names on the back. “I’m a fan of the whole team, not just one player,” she emphasizes. Her distinctive jersey, emblazoned with No. 25—signifying the year 2025—proudly states “Fan of the Year.”

The recognition is part of a league-wide initiative, with one fan from each of the 32 NFL teams being honored annually. Bettencourt eagerly anticipates the upcoming NFL playoffs, where she will cheer on the 49ers as they face the Philadelphia Eagles.

A Journey Rooted in History

Bettencourt’s love for the 49ers began at an early age, inspired by her parents, Angelo and Lorraine. She fondly recalls the excitement of the “Million Dollar Backfield,” which featured legendary players like quarterback Y.A. Tittle and halfbacks Hugh McElhenny and Joe Perry. Her fandom deepened over the years, especially during a memorable birthday celebration when she shared cake with 49ers players Abe Woodson and Matt Hazeltine.

Her connection to the team has only grown stronger over the decades. Bettencourt became a full-time season ticket holder in the early 1990s and has continued to support the team through thick and thin, even following their move to Levi’s Stadium in 2014. “I never considered giving up my season tickets,” she states. “It’s been so fun because you have your real family and then all these fans you spend time with each game that become your other family.”

Her love for the game extends beyond mere statistics. “I love the physicality of it,” she explains. “Every play, all the players are giving it their all. It can be slow at times, but it’s never boring.” Bettencourt has witnessed the sport’s evolution firsthand, from her early days at Kezar Stadium to the modern-day spectacle at Levi’s Stadium.

Embracing the 49ers Community

Bettencourt’s commitment to the 49ers has fostered a sense of belonging within the team’s fanbase. She has built lasting friendships with fellow fans, many of whom she tailgates with before games. “You spend time with them. It’s been wonderful,” she shares. Her enthusiasm is infectious, as she highlights her admiration for various players, including Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Jerry Rice.

Among her prized possessions is a signed jersey from John Taylor, who caught the winning touchdown in Super Bowl XXIII. Bettencourt regards Taylor as an essential player who contributed to the success of the team, stating, “There would be no Jerry Rice without John Taylor.”

As the 2025 Fan of the Year, Bettencourt looks forward to the possibility of celebrating a sixth Super Bowl victory with the 49ers. “In my necklace, there are five footballs, and I’ve been looking to add a sixth for when they can get that sixth Super Bowl,” she notes with hopeful anticipation.

As the playoffs approach, Bettencourt will be among the most passionate supporters in the stands, cheering for her beloved 49ers. Her journey as a fan reflects a deep commitment to the team, underscoring the profound connection between sports and community.
