Remy Arrives as Midland’s First Baby of 2026

The first baby of 2026 in Midland, Michigan, arrived at exactly 2:05 a.m. on January 1. Remington Lorraine Kempf, affectionately known as “Remy,” weighed in at 7 pounds and measured 20.25 inches at birth. She is the first child of proud parents Chyann Walter and Bryce Kempf, marking a significant milestone for both families as she is the first grandchild for each set of grandparents.

Chyann had originally been scheduled for a C-section on January 5, but Remy’s arrival came unexpectedly. Chyann went into labor around 10:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve while at their home in Standish. “That’s when we rushed to the hospital here in Midland,” Bryce recounted. The couple arrived at MyMichigan Medical Center shortly after midnight, and Chyann underwent the operation about an hour later. Dr. Logan Steffke delivered Remy safely by C-section.

The joy of welcoming their daughter is immeasurable for both parents. “Best feeling in the world. She’s my little bundle of joy,” said Chyann, expressing her elation. Bryce echoed her sentiments, stating, “Honestly, it feels great. It’s a great feeling to be a dad.” The news of having the first baby of the year added an unexpected thrill to their experience. “I was definitely surprised. I definitely was not expecting that news,” Chyann shared.

To celebrate Remy’s arrival, the hospital presented the family with gifts including blankets, books, and formula. The couple is hopeful to return home by Wednesday, reflecting on the extraordinary start to their new year. “It was a wonderful New Year’s gift, it definitely was. And I can’t wait to see what the future has in store,” Bryce remarked, looking forward to the journey ahead with their newborn daughter.
