UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown at the Scholastic Play By Play Classic, Brunswick senior point guard Trey Drexler delivered an electrifying performance, scoring 36 points to propel the Blue Devils past St. Vincent-St. Mary with a final score of 55-49 on January 4, 2026. This victory solidifies Brunswick’s position as a formidable contender in high school basketball.
With the game held at Euclid High School’s Harold “Doc” Daugherty Gymnasium, Drexler showcased his scoring prowess, rallying the eighth-ranked Blue Devils (9-1) after falling behind early. The Fighting Irish, ranked fourth in the cleveland.com Top 25, initially seized control with an 11-point lead, but Drexler’s explosive performance turned the tide.
“Right before the season, I bought two pairs of these Nike Buzz Lightyear shoes,” Drexler shared. “They fit well against St. Vincent-St. Mary.” His confidence shone through as he scored 32 of Brunswick’s 44 points through three quarters, demonstrating his exceptional ability to handle pressure, according to head coach Joe Mackey.
“People talk about his ability to score, his pull-up jumper, but I think one of the best things about Trey is that you can’t press him,” Mackey stated.
As the game intensified, Drexler clinched the victory by sinking four crucial free throws after STVM closed the gap to just two points in the final minute. In contrast, DeCarlo Prince led the Irish rally with 18 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Drexler’s outstanding performance.
The drama didn’t end there, as the Classic also featured a significant matchup where Lutheran East defeated Euclid 74-59. The Falcons, currently ranked first, responded to an early challenge from the hosts, with Dylan Zeigler scoring 27 points and hitting five three-pointers. Freshman Bryce Irby added a buzzer-beater at the end of the first quarter to help Lutheran East maintain control.
Euclid’s Kye Owens led his team with 24 points and seven rebounds, but the Falcons’ relentless pressure proved too much. The win improves Lutheran East’s record to 8-0, highlighting their dominance in the region.
In other notable results, Garfield Heights showcased a dominant win against Shaker Heights, finishing 80-48 with Marcus Johnson scoring 26 points. Meanwhile, Glenville edged out Hawken in a closely contested match, 67-62, thanks to a late-game putback by Theo Castro.
