Jerry Welsh, a prominent figure in collegiate basketball and a longtime head coach at SUNY Potsdam, has passed away at the age of 89. His son, Tim Welsh, a college men’s basketball analyst for ESPN, confirmed the news on Tuesday. Welsh’s coaching legacy is marked by remarkable achievements and a profound impact on the sport.

Welsh served as the head coach of the men’s basketball team at SUNY Potsdam from 1968 to 1991. During his tenure, he led the Bears to significant triumphs, including NCAA Division III national championships in 1981 and 1986. The latter season was particularly notable as Welsh’s team finished with an unblemished record of 32-0. His coaching prowess was evident as the Bears achieved a remarkable win streak of 60 games into the 1986-87 season.

Under Welsh’s guidance, the Bears also reached the NCAA Division III finals as runners-up in 1979, 1982, and 1985. Over his 22 seasons at SUNY Potsdam, he compiled an impressive overall record of 494-141, showcasing his ability to develop talent and lead successful teams.
