The Sherman Police Department in Texas has initiated a wellness program aimed at improving the mental health of its officers by introducing Monte, a one-year-old spaniel-mix, as their emotional support dog. Chief Jason Jeffcoat emphasized the significance of mental wellness for police officers, stating, “Our community deserves our officers to be well and taken care of.” With this initiative, the department seeks to provide additional resources to help officers cope with the stresses associated with their roles.
In addition to Monte’s presence, the department has already established various support mechanisms, including an on-campus gym and a peer support team. These resources are designed to assist employees during challenging times, reinforcing a culture where mental health is prioritized.

Monte, who was adopted from the Sherman Animal Shelter, joined the police force in late July or early August. Since then, he has been undergoing training to ensure he can effectively fulfill his role as an emotional support dog. “You see this little guy roaming our hallways, I don’t know how it couldn’t brighten your day a little bit,”
a staff member remarked, highlighting the positive influence Monte has had on the work environment.
