Macaulay Culkin Celebrates ‘Home Alone’ Legacy With Family Insights

Macaulay Culkin recently shared his reflections on the beloved holiday film ‘Home Alone’ during a special screening at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles, commemorating the movie’s 35th anniversary. The event featured a question-and-answer session with director Chris Columbus, where Culkin opened up about his children’s affection for the film and his efforts to keep its magic alive.

Culkin revealed that his children, Dakota, aged 4, and Carson, aged 3, refer to the film simply as “Kevin.” He noted, “They’re like, ‘Wow, Kevin’s really funny.’ I go, ‘He’s also handsome, somebody that your mom might be into,'” as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The actor has not disclosed his identity as Kevin McCallister to them, stating, “I try to keep the magic alive.”

During the Q&A, Culkin recounted a moment when his oldest son viewed an old family photo, mistaking him for his character. “He looks right at me, and he goes, ‘Who’s that? That looks like Kevin,’” Culkin shared, highlighting the innocent connection his children have with the film.

Reflecting on his career, Culkin expressed gratitude towards his partner, Brenda Song, especially during a recent ceremony where he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He described her as the “best woman” he has ever known, crediting her for bringing purpose to his life and for their family. Culkin stated, “You’ve given me family. And after the birth of our two boys, you’ve become one of my three favorite people.”

Their relationship began in 2014 at a mutual friend’s gathering, but it blossomed into romance in 2017 while they were filming the comedy ‘Changeland’. They became engaged in January 2022, with sources indicating their excitement for the future together.

Culkin’s perspective on ‘Home Alone’ has evolved since becoming a father. He now finds himself connecting more with Catherine O’Hara’s character, who desperately tries to return to her son. “Now I can see it through their eyes,” he remarked about watching the film with his children. He enjoys observing their reactions, saying, “I watch their eyes. I listen to them laugh, and it makes me really proud to be a part of something like that.”

The actor emphasized the film’s significance, noting how it continues to be cherished by new generations. “You guys were raised on it, now you guys are raising your kids on it, right? So, now I’m raising my kids on it. It means something completely different,” he explained.

Culkin’s heartfelt reflections highlight the enduring impact of ‘Home Alone’, not just as a holiday classic but as a shared experience that bridges generations. As the film continues to resonate with audiences, Culkin’s insights remind fans of the magic that can be found in both cinema and family.
