UPDATE: Boston firefighters swiftly extinguished a significant fire at a residential property in Dorchester early Christmas morning, displacing three residents and causing an estimated $950,000 in damages.
Fire crews responded to the urgent call at 699 Washington St. shortly after 8:00 AM. Upon arrival, they encountered heavy flames engulfing the 2.5-story wood frame home, prompting the immediate activation of a second alarm.
“Fire companies have knocked down the heavy fire and are checking for hotspots and extension,” the Boston Fire Department reported via social media. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this intense blaze.
In a show of community support, the Red Cross and the Bureau of Fire Investigation’s Victim Assistance Unit were dispatched to aid the displaced residents. The Boston Sparks Association also provided essential rehabilitation services to firefighters battling the frigid 30-degree weather.
This fire comes amid a tragic backdrop, as a separate incident in Needham resulted in the death of a 21-year-old woman just hours earlier on Christmas Eve. Firefighters responded to 28 Woodworth Road shortly before 5:00 AM, where they faced overwhelming flames that claimed the life of one resident while two others managed to escape.
The Needham fire drew a four-alarm response, with approximately 75 firefighters engaged in a fierce battle against the flames for over seven hours. The cause of this devastating fire is still under investigation, with officials from the Needham Fire Department, Needham Police Department, and various state agencies involved in the inquiry.
State Fire Marshal Jon Davine emphasized the importance of fire safety, especially during the winter months, stating, “We know that tragedies like this one are most common in the winter months. Please ensure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home and a practiced escape plan in the event of an emergency.”
As recovery efforts continue in Dorchester and Needham, authorities urge residents to stay vigilant. With holiday gatherings underway, the risk of fire incidents increases significantly.
Stay tuned for updates as investigations unfold and the community comes together to support those affected by these tragic events.
