A tragic explosion in Moscow on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including two police officers. This incident occurred just days after a separate car bomb attack claimed the life of a high-ranking military official in the same area, raising concerns about escalating violence against Russian officials.
According to the Investigative Committee, the two traffic police officers were responding to a report of a “suspicious individual” when an explosive device detonated. The spokesperson, Svetlana Petrenko, confirmed in a statement that the officers and another nearby civilian succumbed to their injuries from the blast. Investigators and forensic experts were promptly deployed to the scene to gather evidence.
Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, the head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, was killed on Monday in a car bomb attack. The explosive device detonated under his vehicle in southern Moscow, marking a significant security breach in the capital. Authorities have indicated that Ukraine may be connected to this attack, which is the third killing of a senior military officer in just over a year.
The first of these high-profile incidents occurred on December 17, 2024, when Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, chief of the military’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection forces, was killed by a bomb hidden on an electric scooter outside his apartment building. Tragically, Kirillov’s assistant also lost their life in the attack. Following this incident, an Uzbek man was arrested and charged with killing Kirillov on behalf of the Ukrainian security service.
In April, another senior military officer, Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik, who served as deputy head of the main operational department in the General Staff, was fatally injured by an explosive device placed in his car. This attack occurred near his apartment building just outside Moscow, and authorities quickly apprehended a suspected perpetrator.
Since the onset of the conflict that began nearly four years ago when Russia deployed troops into Ukraine, Russian authorities have increasingly attributed various assassinations of military personnel and public figures to Ukrainian operatives. While Ukraine has claimed responsibility for some of these incidents, the ongoing violence reflects the heightened tensions between the two nations.
