Community Remembers JoAnn Adkins: A Life of Service and Faith

JoAnn Adkins, a beloved member of her community, passed away on December 7, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on June 20, 1937, in St. Louis, Missouri, JoAnn was the daughter of James and Alma Glien. Her life journey was marked by her unwavering faith, dedication to family, and a long career in retail.

During her early childhood, JoAnn and her family moved to Benton Harbor, Michigan, seeking better opportunities. It was here that she accepted Christ at a young age at the Community Church of God in Christ. This foundation of faith guided her throughout her life, influencing her relationships and community involvement.

In pursuit of financial opportunities, JoAnn relocated with her family, including her twin daughters, to Gary, Indiana. Here, she became a familiar face in the community as she dedicated 40 years of her life to working as a cashier at Jewel-Osco. Her commitment to her job and her friendly demeanor made her a cherished figure among customers and colleagues alike. JoAnn officially retired in 2010, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and service.

Memorial services for JoAnn Adkins are scheduled for Saturday, December 27, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Timothy Unity Church, located at 1600 West 25th Avenue, Gary, IN 46404. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be streamed online at www.sttimothychurch.org, allowing friends and family from afar to participate in honoring her memory.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages the community to consider planting a living memorial in JoAnn’s honor. This gesture reflects her love for life, nature, and the positive impact she made on those around her.
