Minnesota Man Triumphs Over Homelessness, Finds New Home in Grand Forks

A Minnesota man, after overcoming significant challenges, has moved from a homeless shelter into his own apartment in Grand Forks. This transition marks a crucial step in Troy Miller’s journey towards stability and recovery.

Miller, originally from Sandstone, Minnesota, relocated to Grand Forks earlier this year following a six-month inpatient treatment program in St. Cloud. His initial goal was to access outpatient treatment, but he found himself at the Northlands Rescue Mission, the city’s primary emergency shelter, where he faced the difficulties of starting anew. “I don’t know anybody here, and it was really hard to get started,” Miller shared about his experience in the unfamiliar city.

The backdrop of Miller’s struggles includes a history of family addiction issues and a recent separation from his long-term girlfriend, which left him without stable housing. He recognized the need to seek help for himself, a challenge he admits he had always struggled with. “I always want to help people. I never want to help myself,” he said. His daughters have played a pivotal role in motivating him to focus on his own wellbeing, and he speaks to them daily, expressing their pride in his progress.

As of March 15, 2025, Miller took a significant step by moving into his new apartment. He described his new neighborhood as “really nice” and expressed excitement about the prospect of having his family visit. “I’m looking forward to having my family up (to visit), and living here as long as I can,” he stated.

Miller’s journey to independence was supported by a new friend in Grand Forks, who assisted him in finding his apartment. Although he faces ongoing challenges, such as obtaining new glasses and completing his medication-assisted treatment, he remains optimistic. “This is the first time I’ve been (four months) sober,” Miller remarked. “I love being sober.”

According to a recent social media post by Northlands Rescue Mission, Miller is among approximately 260 individuals the organization has helped find housing in 2025. His story highlights the importance of support systems and the impact of community resources in aiding those facing homelessness.

Miller’s determination to rebuild his life encapsulates a hopeful narrative. As he continues to work on his personal goals, he remains committed to fostering connections with his daughters and maintaining his sobriety. The journey ahead may still hold challenges, but Miller is ready to embrace the future with confidence.
