BREAKING: The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just approved a revolutionary pill version of Wegovy, providing a much cheaper and needle-free alternative for weight loss. $149 per month is the starting price, significantly lower than the current injectable version costing around $1,350 monthly before insurance. This approval marks a major milestone in the fight against obesity.
Novo Nordisk announced the approval today, making Wegovy the first oral GLP-1 drug specifically cleared for weight management. The pill contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient found in the injectable form. The launch is expected as early as January 2024, with availability through pharmacies and select telehealth providers.
This once-daily pill aims to deliver results comparable to the injectable Wegovy. In a late-stage clinical trial involving over 300 patients, those taking the pill lost an average of 16.6% of their body weight over approximately 64 weeks—a promising outcome similar to what users of the injectable version experienced.
“We are thrilled to offer a convenient, once-daily pill that can help patients achieve their weight loss goals,” said Mike Doustdar, CEO of Novo Nordisk. The pill is indicated for adults with obesity or those who are overweight and have at least one weight-related health condition. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes.
Demand for GLP-1 drugs has surged in recent years. A recent survey by health policy research group KFF revealed that about 12% of adult Americans are now using GLP-1 medications like Wegovy or Ozempic for weight loss or chronic conditions, an increase of 6% in just 18 months. However, many users report struggling with affordability; nearly half of those surveyed said that costs remain a significant burden, even with insurance coverage.
As the launch date approaches, Novo Nordisk is expected to provide further details on insurance coverage and savings options for higher doses. This new option promises to make effective weight management more accessible for many Americans seeking solutions.
