The Seattle Mariners have bolstered their roster by signing outfielder Rob Refsnyder to a one-year contract, announced on Monday. This move introduces a seasoned right-handed hitter to the team as it prepares for the upcoming season. Refsnyder, who will turn 35 in March, previously played with the Boston Red Sox for four seasons.
In the most recent season, Refsnyder demonstrated his capability at the plate, recording a batting average of .269, along with nine home runs and 30 RBIs across 70 games and 209 plate appearances. His performance included an impressive .838 OPS, showcasing his offensive potential. Within the Mariners’ lineup, he is anticipated to see significant playing time at designated hitter when facing left-handed pitchers. Additionally, he could serve as a viable option in the corner outfield positions or as a backup to Josh Naylor at first base.
Mariners general manager Justin Hollander emphasized the value Refsnyder brings to the team, stating, “Rob has been one of the most productive hitters against left-handed pitching over the last four seasons and provides balance and impact offensively to our lineup.” This sentiment underscores Refsnyder’s ability to contribute to the Mariners’ offensive strategy.
For the past five seasons, Refsnyder has consistently excelled against left-handed pitchers, maintaining a batting average exceeding .300 in that category. Over his entire career, he has a .255 batting average with a total of 33 home runs and a .730 OPS, having played in the Major Leagues for ten seasons with various teams, including the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays, Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins, and the Red Sox.
Born in South Korea, Refsnyder garnered attention during his college career, notably being named the Most Outstanding Player at the 2012 College World Series, where he played a pivotal role in helping the University of Arizona secure the NCAA championship.
The Mariners’ acquisition of Refsnyder not only adds depth to their roster but also enhances their offensive capabilities as they aim for a successful season ahead.
