Urgent Update: Police Shoot Man Armed with Box Cutter in Queens

UPDATE: Police officers in Queens fatally shot a 29-year-old man early this morning after he allegedly charged at them wielding a box cutter. The incident occurred at approximately 12:25 a.m. on December 21, 2023, at 1170 Nameoke St. in Far Rockaway.

According to NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera, officers from the 101st Precinct were dispatched following a 911 call regarding a domestic dispute between a father and son. Upon arrival, the officers initially failed to locate the suspect inside the apartment. However, as they exited with the parents, the son was spotted in the hallway, armed with a box cutter.

Chief Rivera stated, “The officers gave multiple verbal commands to the male to drop the weapon as they attempted to deescalate the situation; the male did not comply.” In a sudden escalation, the father moved behind the officers as his son charged at them. One officer deployed a Taser, while another opened fire, striking the man.

Emergency responders attempted to revive the suspect, who was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The officers involved were evaluated at a local hospital but reported no injuries.

“This incident once again demonstrates the dangers that our police officers face every day and how a routine call can quickly escalate into an extremely dangerous situation,” Chief Rivera emphasized.

The NYPD Force Investigation Division is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, highlighting ongoing concerns about police interactions in high-stress situations.

As this story develops, officials urge the community to remain informed and aware of the ongoing investigations. Further updates are expected as more details emerge from the NYPD’s inquiry.
