Pope Leo XIV Calls Global Cardinals for Governance Assembly

Pope Leo XIV has summoned cardinals from around the world for a significant two-day assembly aimed at guiding the governance of the Catholic Church. This gathering, known as a consistory, will take place in Vatican City on January 7-8, 2025, following the conclusion of the Holy Year celebrations on January 6.

This consistory marks a pivotal moment for Pope Leo, who was elected as the first American pope on May 8, 2025. His early tenure has largely been focused on fulfilling the obligations associated with the Holy Year, including meeting with pilgrimage groups and conducting special Jubilee audiences and Masses. With the upcoming assembly, Leo is poised to shift his attention toward establishing his own agenda.

The decision to summon all cardinals is noteworthy. Previous Pope, Francis, often bypassed the traditional consistory approach in favor of a smaller advisory group composed of eight or nine selected cardinals. According to the Vatican, Leo’s inaugural consistory “will be oriented toward fostering common discernment and offering support and advice to the Holy Father in the exercise of his high and grave responsibility in the government of the universal Church.”

The upcoming meeting will not involve the installation of new cardinals, which is another common function of consistories. Instead, this assembly will serve purely as a consultative platform, emphasizing collaboration among the church’s senior leaders.

As the world watches, Pope Leo XIV prepares to navigate the challenges and responsibilities of his pontificate, with the January meetings likely setting the tone for his leadership style and priorities within the Catholic Church.
