Greenville High Hosts Festive Holiday Dinner for 1,100 Students

UPDATE: Greenville High School students were treated to a festive holiday dinner on December 9, serving up traditional favorites like mashed potatoes, glazed maple carrots, and roasted ham. The event, organized by the school district’s food and nutrition department, aimed to create a joyful atmosphere and ensure every student had access to a special meal.

With approximately 1,100 students in attendance, the annual holiday dinner offered a unique experience for many who might not otherwise enjoy such a feast. Food and Nutrition Director Dan Kuk emphasized the significance of this event, stating it allows students from diverse backgrounds, including those from impoverished families and international exchange students, to partake in a cherished holiday tradition.

“This is our take on a holiday dinner for Greenville High School students,” Kuk said. “Not all of them get to participate in this type of meal, and we want to make sure everyone feels included.”

The school district provides free or reduced breakfast and lunch, and the holiday dinner was equally accessible, offered at no cost to students. Kuk highlighted the importance of community support in funding the event, stating, “It’s a little bit of an added expense, but the school district helps out with that.”

The dinner was more than just a meal; it was an experience filled with holiday spirit. Students enjoyed festive decorations organized by DECA students, who also volunteered to serve homemade desserts like apple crumble and cherry turnovers topped with whipped cream. Emily Fox, DECA vice president of public relations, shared the organization’s commitment to enhancing the event, stating, “We wanted to bring a little something extra for the holiday dinner.”

Throughout the event, students savored their meals in a cheerful environment, enhanced by the sounds of Christmas music. Senior students expressed gratitude for the festive atmosphere. Kendal Taylor, a sophomore, remarked, “It’s really nice and it makes me feel festive.” Fellow student Gabby Pelak added, “It was also nice to have something to look forward to at lunch.”

In an exciting twist, GHS employee and Greenville City Councilman Claude Johnson made a surprise appearance as “Santa Claude,” entertaining students alongside The Grinch. This unexpected visit brought more joy to the occasion, further enhancing the festive spirit of the day.

As the event concluded, Kuk praised his staff for their dedication, saying, “I’m so grateful for my staff and the extra effort they put into meals like this.” He expressed hope that the students would cherish the experience, reflecting the school’s commitment to serving its community.

The success of the holiday dinner underscores the vital role of local schools in providing not only education but also essential support and joy during the holiday season. Students and staff alike look forward to this cherished tradition, making it an unforgettable part of the school year.
