Arizona State’s Dillingham Seeks Contract Extension Amid Speculation

Kenny Dillingham, the head coach of Arizona State University (ASU), expressed his deep affection for his alma mater during a press conference on Saturday, emphasizing his desire to secure an enhanced contract as speculation mounts regarding his candidacy for the head coaching position at the University of Michigan.

Dillingham, who has led ASU since late 2022, became visibly emotional as he spoke about his connection to the institution, stating, “I love this place,” while fighting back tears. His commitment to ASU is underscored by his personal ties; he grew up near the campus and has family living close by.

Regarding contract discussions, Dillingham revealed that his agent is in talks with ASU about a revised agreement. “They sent my agent one after the last game at some point,” he explained. “I’m not really involved in that. That’s kind of my team. I coach football.”

The speculation surrounding his potential move to Michigan intensified late Friday, particularly after social media activity indicated that several Wolverines players began following him. Dillingham, 35, acknowledged Michigan’s esteemed status in college football, calling it “one of the best programs in the country” and praising its iconic brand. This wave of interest follows the dismissal of Michigan’s former coach, Sherrone Moore, who was let go due to violations of university policy.

Despite the allure of the Michigan job, Dillingham made it clear that his feelings for ASU remain strong. “That doesn’t change how I feel about here,” he noted. He further highlighted his personal connections, stating, “That doesn’t change that my sister’s my neighbor. That doesn’t change that my parents live three doors down.”

Dillingham has had a notable impact at ASU, leading the team to a Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff appearance in 2024, marking the Sun Devils’ first season in the conference. His overall record stands at 22-16 over three seasons. ASU is scheduled to face ACC champion Duke University on December 31, 2024, in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

While Dillingham has been a candidate for other high-profile positions this coaching cycle, including at LSU, he has consistently affirmed his commitment to Arizona State. Other potential candidates for the Michigan job include Kalen DeBoer of Alabama and Jedd Fisch, the current head coach at Washington and a former assistant under Jim Harbaugh at Michigan.

In light of these developments, the coming weeks will be crucial for both Dillingham and Arizona State as they navigate contract negotiations and the implications of his coaching future.
