Walter Clarence Gilliam Remembered for His Service and Legacy

Walter Clarence Gilliam, affectionately known as “Piggy” and “Waldo,” passed away, leaving behind a legacy of service and community involvement. Born on August 31, 1944, in Cairo, Illinois, he was the sixth child of Reverend Mayo and Culer Gilliam. His life journey was marked by achievements in sports, art, and public service.

Gilliam attended Douglas School and graduated from Gary Roosevelt High School in 1962. He excelled as a pitcher for the school’s varsity baseball team, earning the title of Gary All-Star MVP. His passion for the arts led him to study at several institutions, including Alabama A&M University, Chicago State University, and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

In his professional life, Gilliam worked at notable companies such as Ford Stamping, Inland Steel, and American Can. He dedicated a significant portion of his career to law enforcement, retiring as a U.S. Criminal Investigating Lieutenant. Additionally, he was a founding member of H & H Inc. and served his country as a Vietnam Veteran in the U.S. Army. His commitment to community service was further exemplified through his life memberships with VFW Post #2151, Amvets Post #6, and American Legion Post #270.

Community Engagement and Personal Interests

Active in his faith, Gilliam was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Gary, Indiana. He enjoyed a variety of pastimes, including billiards, bid-whist, pinochle, and was passionate about music, particularly jazz and gospel. His artistic talents extended to cooking, photography, and painting, showcasing a vibrant personality that touched many lives.

Gilliam is remembered by his family, including his son, Jeramine (Brittney) Duff, and granddaughter, Angel Walker. He is survived by his sisters, Thelma Rainge and Arlessie McNeil, and brothers, Oliver (Mary Brown) Gilliam and Marvin (Cora) Gilliam, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Dorothy Gilliam-Ford, as well as his brother-in-law, Rudolph Rainge.

Visitation and Funeral Services

Visitation for Walter Clarence Gilliam will be held on December 13, 2025, at Smith, Bizzell and Warner Funeral Home Chapel, located at 4209 Richard G. Hatcher Blvd, Gary, Indiana. The funeral service will commence promptly at 11:00 AM.
