Tomlin Confident Metcalf Will Play Against Dolphins on Monday

PITTSBURGH — Coach Mike Tomlin expressed optimism regarding the availability of wide receiver DK Metcalf for the upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins on December 11, 2023. Metcalf’s situation followed a hospital visit and overnight stay in Baltimore after the Steelers’ 27-22 win on Sunday. Tomlin stated, “He’s moving in the right direction,” during his weekly news conference, adding that he does not believe the incident will affect Metcalf’s ability to play.

Despite the positive outlook, Tomlin acknowledged that Metcalf might be limited in practice early in the week due to his recent health scare. “Thankfully he’s fine. I’m appreciative of our medical staff and how quickly they acted,” Tomlin noted, emphasizing the importance of ensuring Metcalf’s safety.

Metcalf’s hospital visit stemmed from stomach pains he reported after an impressive performance, where he recorded a season-high 148 yards on seven receptions. Medical personnel removed him from the team flight, and he received treatment before spending the night in a local hotel. “He got hit in the abdomen or stomach in-game,” Tomlin explained, detailing that Metcalf was administered over-the-counter remedies like Pepto-Bismol during the match.

Injury Concerns for the Steelers

While Metcalf is expected to play against a Dolphins defense that has limited opponents to an average of just 13.3 points per game over their last four victories, the Steelers face uncertainty regarding several other key players. Currently, tight end Darnell Washington, offensive tackle Andrus Peat, and linebacker Malik Harrison are in the concussion protocol. Additionally, cornerback James Pierre is dealing with a calf injury, and defensive lineman Keeanu Benton is managing an ankle issue.

Tomlin also mentioned that safety Kyle Dugger has “a chance” to return after missing the previous game due to a hand injury. The status of first-round draft pick Derrick Harmon, who has missed the last two games due to a knee injury, remains uncertain, with his practice participation likely determining his availability for Monday night.

To manage the growing list of injuries and allow for adequate recovery, Tomlin has granted the Steelers an off day on Wednesday. The team will resume practice on Thursday with a standard Wednesday schedule. “We just deemed it appropriate to give ourselves another additional 24 hours of recovery this week,” Tomlin explained, highlighting the necessity of rest as they prepare for the Dolphins.

As the Steelers (7-6) look ahead to this crucial game, the health of their roster will play a significant role in their playoff ambitions. With Metcalf’s likely return and the team’s strategic focus on recovery, they aim to enhance their performance against a formidable Miami defense.
