Siena Lacrosse Coach Liam Gleason, 41, Passes After Fall

Siena College men’s lacrosse coach Liam Gleason has died at the age of 41, following a traumatic brain injury sustained from a fall at his home. The school announced his passing on March 13, 2024, just three days after the incident. Gleason had recently led the Saints to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship and earned a spot in the NCAA tournament during his seventh season with the program.

In a heartfelt statement, Siena President Chuck Seifert expressed the profound sense of loss felt by the community. “A sudden, senseless loss carries a kind of pain that defies understanding,” he stated. “It’s hard to imagine anyone more universally loved and admired than Liam. Our community was blessed by Coach Gleason’s life.”

Gleason is survived by his wife and three children. In response to their needs, a fundraising initiative has been established to support the family during this difficult time. The lacrosse community has rallied around the Gleason family, with many expressing their condolences and support.

On the afternoon of March 13, as Gleason was transported to surgery for organ donation, dozens of individuals, including Siena players, university officials, and members of the University at Albany athletic community, lined the hospital hallway to pay their respects. The poignant scene underscored the impact Gleason had on those around him, even in his final moments.

A standout player during his collegiate career at Albany, Gleason began his coaching journey at Siena as an assistant before returning to Albany in the same capacity. He rejoined Siena in 2018 as head coach, where he quickly became a beloved figure in the athletics program.

A funeral service for Gleason will take place on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at 11 AM at the UHY Center on Siena’s campus, where friends, family, and supporters are invited to honor his memory. The outpouring of grief and appreciation for his contributions to the sport and community highlights the enduring legacy he leaves behind.
