Verizon Launches Affordable 5G Fixed Wireless Access Service

Verizon has introduced a new version of its 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) service, specifically targeting budget-conscious consumers with lower data needs. Known as Verizon Home Internet Lite (VHI), this service is designed for households outside of the Fios broadband coverage area, offering an alternative for those who have struggled with older broadband technologies like DSL or satellite.

VHI is tailored for customers who generally have light usage requirements. According to a representative for Verizon, the service operates on C-Band frequencies when the 5G network is not accessible. For consumers looking for affordability, VHI is priced at $25 per month when bundled with a mobile plan, or $35 if purchased as a standalone option.

Service Details and Performance Capabilities

The new service is capped at a download speed of 25 Mb/s, with typical speeds ranging between 10 Mb/s and 25 Mb/s. After customers use the first 15 GB of data in a month, their speeds will be throttled to a maximum of 10 Mb/s, with unlimited data available for the remainder of the billing cycle. To facilitate access, VHI includes a free router for self-installation.

For comparison, Verizon’s standard 5G Home Internet plans range from approximately $35 to $75 per month, depending on the selected package and whether customers already have a mobile plan.

In the second quarter of 2023, Verizon added 278,000 new FWA customers, raising its total to 5.1 million. The company’s CEO, Hans Vestberg, previously indicated that Verizon aims to reach between 8 million and 9 million subscribers by 2028.

Future Expansion and Strategic Moves

Earlier this month, Verizon announced its intention to acquire the regional FWA provider Starry for an undisclosed amount. This acquisition is part of a broader strategy to enhance service availability, particularly in buildings with multiple dwelling units.

As the demand for high-speed internet continues to grow, Verizon’s VHI service presents a cost-effective option for consumers seeking reliable internet access without the high price tag associated with traditional broadband solutions. The introduction of this service marks a significant step toward bridging the digital divide for underserved communities.
