U.S. Coast Guard Surpasses Recruitment Goals for Second Year

The U.S. Coast Guard achieved a significant milestone by exceeding its recruitment targets for the second consecutive year in fiscal 2025. The service welcomed a total of 5,204 active-duty enlisted personnel, surpassing its goal of 4,300 recruits. This marks the highest number of new active-duty enlisted members since 1991.

Adm. Kevin Lunday, the acting commandant of the Coast Guard, expressed enthusiasm about the surge in interest, stating, “More Americans want to serve in the Coast Guard than ever before. We aren’t just growing – we are bringing in the best talent from across the United States and building the workforce of the future.” The successful recruitment effort follows a strong performance in fiscal 2024, where the Coast Guard brought in 4,422 new personnel.

In addition to enlisted personnel, the Coast Guard commissioned 371 new officers in fiscal 2025, achieving the highest officer target in recorded history. The service also recruited 777 reservists, exceeding its goal of 750. This accomplishment marks the third year in a row that the Coast Guard has met its reserve recruitment goals.

Expansion of Recruitment Efforts

To sustain its successful recruitment momentum, the U.S. Coast Guard opened seven new recruiting offices during fiscal 2025. These offices are located in key cities such as Miami, Los Angeles, and Cincinnati, as well as in Long Island, Austin, Grand Rapids, and Davenport. This strategic expansion aims to reach a broader audience and attract diverse candidates.

The Coast Guard is undergoing a transformative initiative known as Force Design 2028, introduced by Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem in May. This plan aims to enhance the service’s capabilities and readiness as a fighting force. An executive report outlining this initiative includes plans to establish the first Coast Guard service secretary, reform contracting and acquisitions, leverage technology, and eliminate outdated programs.

The report highlights an ambitious goal to increase the military workforce by 15,000 personnel by fiscal 2028, emphasizing a commitment to bolster the service’s operational capacity.

Overall, the U.S. Coast Guard’s recruitment success reflects a growing interest in military service and a proactive approach to meeting future challenges. By attracting top talent and expanding its workforce, the Coast Guard is positioning itself for enhanced effectiveness in its mission to protect and serve.
