US President Donald Trump announced a new initiative, the US Tech Force, aimed at recruiting 1,000 employees across various government agencies to enhance the country’s artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This two-year programme seeks to position the United States as a leader in technology and innovation, particularly in the rapidly evolving field of AI.
According to the official website, the Tech Force will hire a diverse range of professionals, including software engineers, data scientists, project managers, and AI specialists. These individuals will contribute to high-impact technology projects, focusing on AI implementation, application development, data modernisation, and digital service delivery across federal agencies. The initiative is designed to be ongoing, facilitating a continuous influx of top technical talent into government roles.
The initiative marks a significant collaboration between the government and the private sector, with partnerships established with at least 28 tech companies. Notable participants include Apple, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and OpenAI. These companies have the option to nominate employees for temporary government positions, thus fostering a connection between private sector expertise and public service.
The US Office of Personnel Management is overseeing the early-career programme in collaboration with several federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Treasury. Individuals selected for this programme will have the opportunity to secure permanent roles within government agencies or return to their private sector positions upon completion of their two-year tenure.
Compensation for positions within the Tech Force is set to vary depending on experience and agency placement. Annual salaries are expected to range from $150,000 to $200,000, in addition to benefits.
The Trump administration’s emphasis on AI development is evident in its recent initiatives. In July, the administration unveiled its AI action plan, which aims to reinforce the United States’ standing as the global leader in AI technology. Additionally, on December 11, 2023, President Trump signed an executive order that prohibits states from enforcing individual AI regulations, opting instead for a unified federal approach.
As the competition in AI technology escalates, particularly with countries like China, the Tech Force represents a strategic move to ensure that the United States maintains its edge in technological advancement. The programme not only aims to modernise government practices but also to cultivate a skilled workforce capable of tackling the challenges of the future.
