The top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee has called for Pam Bondi, the Florida Attorney General, to release files connected to the late Jeffrey Epstein. This demand follows the publication of a memoir by abuse survivor Virginia Giuffre, which includes disturbing details about Epstein’s conduct and that of his associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Giuffre’s book, titled Nobody’s Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice, was released earlier this week and has reignited scrutiny over the government’s handling of Epstein’s case.
In a letter addressed to Bondi, Robert Garcia, the Democratic ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, emphasized the need for transparency. He cited Giuffre’s revelations about the abuse she endured, stating that they contradict claims made by government agencies regarding the necessity of further investigation into Epstein’s activities. “Virginia Giuffre’s allegations are heartbreaking and horrific, including testimony that prominent world and US leaders perpetrated sexual assault and sex trafficking of girls and young women,” Garcia articulated in his statement.
Congressional Inquiry into Epstein’s Case
The House Oversight Committee is actively investigating the government’s response to Epstein’s prosecution. Epstein died in federal custody in 2019, and his case has since been surrounded by controversy and speculation. Garcia’s letter specifically references the committee’s request for additional documents, highlighting that the Justice Department must comply with a subpoena approved by committee members in August.
Garcia raised concerns about Bondi’s reluctance to release the files, stating, “Your refusal to release the files and your continued disregard of a congressional subpoena raises serious questions about your motives.” This inquiry gained momentum in July after the Justice Department announced Epstein’s death was ruled a suicide and claimed no list of his clients would be made public, contradicting various statements from former President Donald Trump and Bondi herself.
As the investigation unfolds, three House Republicans joined all Democrats in supporting a petition that will force a vote on legislation aimed at releasing files related to Epstein’s case. This legislative effort is expected to progress once the current government shutdown concludes.
Impact of Giuffre’s Memoir
The publication of Giuffre’s memoir has had significant repercussions, including prompting Prince Andrew to relinquish his royal titles following the release of excerpts by The Guardian. Giuffre had previously accused Andrew of sexually assaulting her when she was just 17 years old, a claim that he has denied. In a separate civil case, Andrew settled with Giuffre for a reported £12 million (approximately $16 million) without admitting liability.
In addition to these developments, the House Oversight Committee’s investigation has resulted in the release of numerous documents, including a drawing allegedly made by Trump for Epstein’s 50th birthday. To date, tens of thousands of pages have been made public, many of which had previously been available.
As the inquiry continues, the spotlight remains on the actions of both government officials and Epstein’s associates, with many seeking accountability for the handling of a case that has drawn international attention.
