The construction of the Altru Sports Complex in Grand Forks is not expected to negatively affect the performance of Choice Health & Fitness, which has reported consistent growth in both membership and visit numbers since 2021. The Grand Forks Parks District, overseeing the project, is confident that the two facilities will complement rather than compete with each other.
Membership Growth and Facility Differences
Choice Health & Fitness, which opened in late 2012 at a cost of approximately $23.3 million, has seen its total membership revenue rise from $1,653,086 in 2021 to an impressive $2,205,903 projected for 2025. Membership numbers have also increased significantly, climbing from 4,470 in 2021 to over 5,000 in 2025. In addition, total visits to the facility grew from 317,669 in 2022 to 365,288 in 2025, showcasing a steady annual rise.
The Altru Sports Complex, currently under construction along 42nd Street, is expected to be approximately 215,000 square feet and cost around $100 million. Funded by a 0.75% sales tax extended after a citywide vote in 2023, the complex will feature a turf playing surface, pickleball courts, sports training areas, and an Olympic-sized pool. Unlike Choice, which operates on a membership basis, the ASC will utilize a rental-based model similar to existing ice rinks in the area.
Aiming to Fill Service Gaps
According to George Hellyer, Executive Director of the Grand Forks Parks District, the goal is to ensure that the Altru Sports Complex offers services that do not duplicate those available at Choice Health & Fitness. “We want to fill in the gaps and not duplicate,” Hellyer explained. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a collaborative rather than competitive relationship between the two venues.
While both facilities will provide swimming opportunities, differences in access are anticipated. Choice Health & Fitness members and daily guests have access to the swimming pool, whereas the Altru Sports Complex will likely offer drop-in days or daily swim passes. The same rental model is expected to apply to the turf area, allowing clubs for soccer, football, and lacrosse to utilize the indoor turf facilities.
Hellyer noted the intention to avoid attracting memberships away from both Choice and the local YMCA, which partners with Choice Health & Fitness. “We don’t want to steal memberships from Choice or the Y,” he said, referencing the concern of members simply shifting from one facility to another.
The growth in membership and revenue at Choice Health & Fitness reflects its commitment to quality service without the need for significant renovations. Recently, the facility has invested in maintenance projects, including replastering the pool and resurfacing tennis courts, ensuring that the user experience remains high.
The Altru Sports Complex is on track for completion by the summer of 2028, according to recent updates from local news sources. The budget remains aligned with the projected $110 million cost of the complex, indicating effective financial management throughout the construction process.
