On October 11, 2023, Akita City in Japan hosted the vibrant festival known as Shofuku-gitsune no Gyoretsu, or the March of Foxes Inviting Luck. Participants transformed themselves into foxes, donning face paint and masks, as they paraded through the Torimachi shopping street, marking the event’s continued success since its inception in 2002.
A Celebration of Community and Tradition
This year’s festival attracted around 100 participants, who began their procession at the Shofuku Inari Shrine, located along the same bustling street. The parade spanned just over half a mile, during which the “foxes” engaged the community by distributing rice stalks and red-and-white daifuku mochi, traditional rice cakes, to spectators lining the route.
As they marched, the participants shouted, “Shobai hanjo, kon, kon, kon,” a phrase that conveys wishes for business prosperity, accompanied by a fox-like cry. This chant resonated with local shopkeepers, adding an enthusiastic communal spirit to the event.
Among the participants was a 24-year-old graduate student from Akita International University, who joined the festival for the first time. Reflecting on her experience, she stated, “We all had fun putting on makeup. The whole community got excited, so it’s a good memory for me.” Her sentiments echo the festival’s aim to foster joy and connection among residents.
Revitalizing Local Culture
The Shofuku-gitsune no Gyoretsu festival serves not only as entertainment but also as a means to revitalize the local economy. Since its launch, the event has drawn both locals and tourists, enhancing the visibility and appeal of the shopping district. By encouraging community involvement and celebrating cultural heritage, the festival has become a vital part of Akita’s annual events.
As the parade concluded, the atmosphere remained festive, with participants and spectators alike celebrating the shared joy of the occasion. The fusion of tradition and community engagement exemplifies the essence of the March of Foxes, ensuring its place in Akita’s cultural landscape for years to come.
