UPDATE: A winter weather advisory for parts of New York is set to expire at 1 a.m. today. The advisory affected Saratoga, Warren, and Fulton counties, where icy conditions have posed significant travel risks.
According to the National Weather Service, while temperatures in the southern Adirondacks and southern Greens hover around freezing, they are expected to gradually warm into the mid-30s early this morning. Although widespread freezing rain has ceased, surfaces that struggled to warm may still remain slippery, raising concerns for motorists.
Winter weather creates hazardous road conditions, contributing to over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries annually. Authorities are urging residents to prioritize safety as they navigate icy roads.
Drivers are advised to slow down and exercise extreme caution, especially in temperatures near freezing. It’s crucial to anticipate icy patches and adjust driving habits accordingly. Be vigilant for ice accumulating on power lines and tree branches, which can lead to dangerous situations if they break and fall.
If you must travel, consider routes that minimize exposure to trees and power lines. Should you encounter a downed power line, do not approach it—call 911 immediately.
To ensure safety on the roads, the National Weather Service recommends the following winter driving tips:
1. **Share Your Travel Plans**: Inform family or friends about your destination, route, and estimated arrival time.
2. **Prepare Your Vehicle**: Keep your gas tank full and equip your vehicle with essential winter supplies, including a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, cell phone, blanket, extra warm clothing, drinking water, and high-calorie non-perishable food.
3. **Stay Calm When Stranded**: If stranded, remain calm and inform someone of your situation and location. Avoid attempting to walk to safety. Signal for assistance by attaching a cloth to your car’s antenna and make your vehicle visible by using your dome light and flashers.
4. **Be Mindful of Snow Plows**: Watch for snow plows and give them plenty of room to operate. Overtake only when you have a clear view of the road ahead.
5. **Check Road Conditions**: Before heading out, verify the latest road conditions to make informed decisions about your travel plans.
These winter driving tips are essential for a safer journey on snow-covered roads. By adhering to these guidelines, you can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and protect your well-being during challenging winter weather.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops, and remain alert as temperatures continue to fluctuate throughout the morning.
