BREAKING: Williams College men’s basketball coach Kevin App has officially reached a milestone of 200 career wins, becoming only the second coach in the school’s history to achieve this feat. The victory was secured on December 20, 2023, during the Daytona Beach Shootout, where Williams narrowly defeated Carleton College with a score of 73-71.
The win not only highlights App’s successful tenure but also marks a significant moment in Williams men’s basketball history. “It was a fun way to cap off the trip,” App commented, reflecting on the achievement while at home in Williamstown. He emphasized the importance of his team, stating, “Whenever 100 came, it was relatively early in a first semester. It was fun to cap off a great trip with that getting announced by the assistants in the locker room.”
First-year guard Khalil Carlson shared the joy of the moment, stating, “It was awesome. We didn’t know it until we got back to the locker room. Obviously, we had to shower him with water. We went out to eat that night. All the families were there. It was really special to celebrate.”
App’s winning record now stands at 200-83, solidifying his position as a prominent figure in NCAA Division III basketball. He is now second only to Harry Sheehy, who coached from 1984 to 2000 and holds the record with 324 wins. App has surpassed notable predecessors such as Dave Paulsen and Mike Maker, both of whom left significant legacies at Williams.
As App enters his 11th year at the helm, he has become the fourth longest-tenured coach in the NESCAC conference. He acknowledged the milestone win was on his radar but emphasized his focus on team development. “I think most coaches are locked into whatever that day brings, whether it’s how to get the team better in practice or how to fight for a win,” he said.
The Ephs will return to Williamstown after the holidays, gearing up for their next challenge against Worcester State on January 3, 2024, at Chandler Gym. With App leading the way, anticipation is building for the upcoming matchup as the team aims to continue their momentum in the new year.
This remarkable achievement not only celebrates App’s dedication but also serves as an inspiration for young athletes and aspiring coaches alike. As the Williams community rallies around their team, the excitement for what lies ahead is palpable.
