West Contra Costa Supervisor Gioia’s Chief of Staff Resigns for New Role

UPDATE: In a significant leadership shift, Sonia Bustamante will step down as the chief of staff for John Gioia, Contra Costa County’s District 1 supervisor, effective Wednesday. After a decade in her role, Bustamante is leaving to lead the SAFE Center/Centro SAFE, an initiative aimed at supporting the Bay Area’s immigrant community.

This transition is happening at a crucial time when communities are seeking stronger advocacy and resources. Bustamante’s departure marks the end of a pivotal chapter in West Contra Costa County, where her efforts have significantly impacted local immigrant populations. Under her leadership, Gioia’s office successfully launched programs like Contra Costa Cares, which provides healthcare access to immigrants, and Stand Together Contra Costa, focusing on legal protections against deportation.

Gioia expressed deep gratitude for Bustamante’s contributions, stating her leadership was instrumental in advancing equity and inclusion in the district. “Her vision and commitment have improved the lives of many Contra Costans,” Gioia said in an official statement.

Taking over the reins as chief of staff will be Robert Rogers, who has also been part of Gioia’s team for ten years. Gioia praised Rogers for his extensive experience and dedication to public service, assuring the community that he will lead with integrity and purpose.

The SAFE Center, funded by $5 million in seed money from Contra Costa County, will serve as a vital hub connecting immigrant families to essential services. With the current socio-political climate, this center aims to provide much-needed support to those at risk. This leadership change highlights the ongoing commitment to community engagement and the urgent need for resources for vulnerable populations. As Bustamante transitions to her new role, the focus remains on ensuring that the needs of the immigrant community in the Bay Area are met effectively.
