UPDATE: Valwood softball standout Aahna Mattis made headlines today by signing a letter of intent with Truett-McConnell University in a heartfelt ceremony surrounded by family and friends. The announcement, made on December 2, 2025, marks a significant milestone in her athletic career as she prepares to take her talents to the collegiate level.
In an emotional moment, Mattis fought back tears while expressing her gratitude. “I’m really proud of what I’ve done so far, just in life, in my softball career,” she stated. Her mother, Janet Mattner, shed tears of joy, celebrating her daughter’s achievements.
The decision comes after an impressive high school career where Mattis batted .351, racking up 20 hits, 15 runs, and 21 RBIs. Notably, during two September games, she demonstrated her skills with standout performances, including a perfect 3-for-3 game against Brookwood, contributing to a commanding 10-0 win.
Mattis cited the beautiful scenery and strong community at Truett-McConnell as key factors in her choice. “The environment, overall… it’s just a great community to be a part of,” she shared, emphasizing her excitement to join the Bears, who finished with a 29-15 record last season under head coach Dylan Reichenberg.
Valwood head coach Courtney Carter praised Mattis for her work ethic and leadership, noting her adaptability as she transitioned to a new position this season. “She’s the one that just holds everybody together,” Carter remarked, highlighting Mattis’ impact on the team and younger players.
Throughout her career, Mattis has played in 51 games, achieving a .312 batting average and a .442 on-base percentage. Her dedication and performance have set her apart, with Carter asserting that if she continues her hard work, success will follow at the collegiate level.
Mattis also expressed gratitude for Coach Carter’s mentorship, calling it one of the best experiences of her life. “She has never given up on anybody she’s coached… she’s helped me grow as a person, as an athlete,” Mattis stated, reflecting on Carter’s influence.
As she embarks on this new chapter, Mattis is not only pursuing her athletic dreams but is also looking forward to playing in a faith-based environment, stating, “We all share the same faith, and we get to play our sport together.”
This announcement is expected to resonate throughout the community as Valwood celebrates one of its own achieving a significant educational and athletic goal. Fans and supporters are eager to see what the future holds for Aahna Mattis at Truett-McConnell.
