Urgent: Texas Education Freedom Accounts Application Ends Soon

UPDATE: Texas families have less than one week to apply for the state’s new school voucher-like program, the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA). The application deadline is set for March 17 at midnight, and officials are urging families to submit their applications as soon as possible.

The TEFA program is a substantial initiative with $1 billion allocated to support families in covering tuition, textbooks, and other educational costs. As of now, over 160,000 applications have been submitted, and the momentum is growing. The Texas Comptroller’s Office, which is overseeing the rollout, assures that all applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed, allowing families to edit their submissions and upload additional documents until the closing time.

While the program is available to all K-12 students in Texas, priority is given to students with disabilities and families with lower income levels. The first three weeks since the application portal opened in February have seen an overwhelming response, with Texans submitting more than 130,000 applications initially. This surge indicates significant interest, particularly in the San Antonio area, where 19,422 families have applied.

Families from the Northside Independent School District have submitted the fourth highest number of applications in the state, totaling 4,102. Close behind are North East ISD at 3,386 and San Antonio ISD with 1,335 applications. The TEFA program aims to serve about 100,000 families in its first year, with awards averaging around $10,000, which represents about 85% of what local school districts receive in state funding per student. Special education students may qualify for awards up to $30,000.

As the clock ticks down to the deadline, families are encouraged to provide documentation of their child’s disability if applying for special education funding. Notably, if demand exceeds the program’s budget, Senate Bill 2 mandates that 80% of the funding be reserved for families earning up to 500% of the federal poverty line.

The application process has also revealed that a significant portion of applicants—21%—are homeschool families, who can receive a maximum of $2,000 per student. According to the Texas Center for Voucher Transparency, a staggering 76% of TEFA applications have come from families whose children are not currently enrolled in public schools, highlighting a shift in educational preferences.

In the face of this development, the Archdiocese of San Antonio, along with other educational groups, is hosting TEFA workshops this week to assist families during spring break. This initiative aims to guide applicants through the process step-by-step.

As of now, more than 230 local schools in the San Antonio area have signed up to accept TEFA funds, along with vendors providing therapy, tutoring, and other services. Families selected for TEFA funding will receive notifications in early April, with at least a quarter of their funds disbursed by July 1.

Parents are reminded that once they select an educational setting, any changes after the March 17 deadline may limit their funding options. Students who choose “homeschool/other” won’t be able to later switch to a private school to qualify for higher funding amounts.

The urgency for families to act is clear as the deadline approaches. The TEFA program presents a potential financial lifeline for many Texas families, making it essential for eligible applicants to take action now. Final application statistics will be made available after March 17, but the existing numbers already indicate a transformative shift in educational funding across the state.
