UPDATE: The Arizona Daily Star Sportsmen’s Fund urgently calls for donations to support children from low-income households and active military families in Southern Arizona. With the summer camp season approaching, the fund is mobilizing to provide scholarships for 423 local children to attend various camps, including YMCA and Girl Scout programs.
In a remarkable fundraising effort, the Sportsmen’s Fund has already received 1,038 donations totaling $253,673.97. However, they have spent $256,252 on scholarships, highlighting the pressing need for additional contributions. This year, the fund introduced scholarships for Flowing Wells students to attend the Sky School camp on Mt. Lemmon, expanding opportunities for children in Title 1 schools.
Since its inception in 1947, the Sportsmen’s Fund has facilitated the attendance of 44,814 children at overnight camps, establishing itself as one of the oldest and most efficient charities in Arizona. Notably, 97 cents from every dollar donated directly supports sending kids to camp.
The Arizona Daily Star Sportsmen’s Fund qualifies for the Arizona tax credit for donations to qualifying charitable organizations. Joint Arizona filers can contribute up to $987 for their 2025 taxes, while other Arizona filers can donate up to $495. The fund’s EIN is 86-6053274, required for certain fund transfers.
Individuals can make credit card donations and find more information about the camps at azsendakidtocamp.org. Checks can be mailed to: Send a Kid to Camp, P.O. Box 16141, Tucson, AZ 85732-6141. For inquiries, contact Debbie Kornmiller at 520-954-3139 or via email at [email protected]. Donations are welcome year-round.
Recent generous contributions include: $10,000 from Jack L. Alexander, $1,044.16 from Felix Fernandez, and $1,000 from Robert Vessella, among others.
As a unique opportunity, individuals aged 70½ or older can donate directly from their IRA and potentially benefit from federal and Arizona tax deductions. This Qualifying Charitable Distribution can be a strategic way to support local children while minimizing tax liabilities.
Your immediate support is crucial. Help ensure that more children have the chance to experience the joy of summer camp. Every contribution makes a difference in the lives of these young individuals. Join the Arizona Daily Star Sportsmen’s Fund in making a lasting impact today!
