UPDATE: The University of Maine football team dominated Stony Brook with a decisive victory, marking their fifth consecutive win on a blustery Saturday at Morse Field in Orono. This victory, which ended with a score of 28-14, is significant as it represents UMaine’s first five-game winning streak since the 2018 season.
With this win, UMaine improves to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the Coastal Athletic Association, while Stony Brook drops to 4-5 and 2-3. The Black Bears built a commanding 21-point lead early in the third quarter, demonstrating their offensive power and resilience.
After leading 14-7 at halftime, the Black Bears opened the second half with a 79-yard drive that culminated in a 1-yard touchdown run by graduate quarterback Carter Peevy, marking his sixth rushing touchdown of the season. A stunning 44-yard pass from Peevy to Aaron Arteaga set the tone for the drive. The very next possession saw the Black Bears capitalize on a fumble by Stony Brook’s Quinn Boyd, with UMaine’s Kye Pressley recovering the ball at the Seawolves’ 15-yard line.
Peevy followed up with a 14-yard touchdown pass to freshman Daniel Batch, celebrating Batch’s first career touchdown. Despite a late-game push from the Seawolves, who scored two rushing touchdowns by Roland Dempster, UMaine’s defense held strong, recovering an onside kick to secure the win.
The Black Bears initially surged ahead with two touchdowns in the first quarter, including an 11-yard touchdown pass from Peevy to Mo Irefin and a 24-yard run by Sincere Baines. Peevy completed 14 of 25 passes for 188 yards, despite facing two interceptions.
Defensively, UMaine effectively contained Stony Brook’s Dempster, limiting him to just 22 rushing yards on 14 carries, a stark contrast to his season average of 111.3 yards per game. The Black Bears’ defense recorded five sacks against Boyd, who managed 299 passing yards but struggled under pressure.
Looking ahead, UMaine will travel to Hampton for a crucial game at 1 p.m. on November 4, 2023, while Stony Brook prepares to host North Carolina A&T at noon. With momentum on their side, fans are eager to see if the Black Bears can extend their winning streak to six games.
This thrilling victory not only underscores UMaine’s potential but also revives hopes for a strong finish to the season. Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses.
