UPDATE: A devastating crash in Aurora has left two adults dead following a high-speed police chase involving a stolen car. The incident occurred at the intersection of East Alameda Avenue and South Peoria Street around 11:30 a.m. today, October 10, 2023. Police confirmed that the driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to make a left turn at a dangerous speed.
Authorities reveal that the stolen car, originally taken from Fort Collins over the weekend, was being tracked by the Aurora Police Department. Officers spotted the vehicle at East Mississippi Avenue and South Peoria Street and attempted to pull it over, but the driver fled, leading to a brief pursuit. The chase lasted only a few minutes before the tragic crash occurred, resulting in the intersection being closed for cleanup and investigation.
No other vehicles were involved in this catastrophic incident; however, debris from the crash damaged a nearby fence. Aurora Police District 1 Cmdr. Justin Shipley highlighted the reckless nature of the chase, stating, “They really did endanger the community with their high speeds on Peoria Street.” Shipley noted that the driver weaved into oncoming traffic before attempting the ill-fated turn.
As of now, the identities of the deceased individuals are pending confirmation from the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office. While the driver’s actions have led to this tragic outcome, details about the passenger’s age and gender remain unconfirmed. Cmdr. Shipley stated, “The officers were having a hard time … safely keeping up with the suspect due to his speed and erratic driving behavior, which resulted in the deadly crash.”
In the aftermath, the Aurora Police Department has announced an internal review of the pursuit and its policies to prevent such tragedies in the future. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with high-speed chases and their potential to endanger innocent lives.
As investigations continue, authorities urge the community to remain vigilant and report any information related to the incident. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
