URGENT UPDATE: Tumbler Ridge is receiving an outpouring of support from around the world following a devastating mass shooting that shook the small Canadian community. Local restaurant owner Wendy Trueit is at the heart of this initiative, providing free meals to first responders and families of the victims.
Trueit, co-owner of Twisted Seasons Bistro, began her mission in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, stating, “I knew I had to do something.” As news of her efforts spread, she received overwhelming offers of assistance from individuals across the globe. “We’ve had people from the U.S., Connecticut, where they’ve had mass shootings that reached out, ‘What can we do to help?’” Trueit shared.
The response has been staggering, with donations pouring in from Canada, Europe, and beyond. Trueit estimates they have received over $1 million in contributions from hundreds of supporters, all aimed at feeding healthcare workers, paramedics, police officers, and firefighters, as well as those mourning lost loved ones.
“People were so generous, sending money to help feed others. I never expected it,” she added. The kindness is not just financial; community members are also rallying together, like Ted Ember from Fort St. John, who made a two-hour drive to deliver bouquets of flowers on behalf of coworkers and friends. “We just thought it would be a nice gesture to show Tumbler Ridge that people care,” Ember said.
In addition, several GoFundMe campaigns for the victims have collectively raised over $1 million, highlighting the widespread compassion and unity in the face of tragedy. Trueit plans to continue providing free meals for as long as the community needs them, including on the first day Tumbler Ridge Secondary students and staff return to class.
Support is also coming from a school in Vancouver, which has offered to cover the cost of meals for the entire community. Trueit was initially hesitant but was reassured by representatives from Northern Health, who pledged to mobilize chefs and staff to assist in this effort.
“It’s a little overwhelming, but we accepted that challenge,” Trueit remarked. For many in Tumbler Ridge, this wave of kindness from strangers serves as a glimmer of hope during a profoundly dark time. “It definitely makes you look at the positive in the world,” she concluded.
As Tumbler Ridge continues to heal, the community stands united, demonstrating resilience and the power of compassion in the face of adversity. Updates on support initiatives and community efforts will follow as this story develops.
