UPDATE: Medora, North Dakota, is gearing up for a monumental event as preparations intensify for the grand opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, anticipated to be the largest celebration in the state’s history. Scheduled from July 1 to July 5, 2026, this historic occasion is expected to attract between 20,000 and 40,000 attendees, including all living U.S. presidents.
The dedication is a key highlight in the nation’s celebration of its 250th birthday, promising a series of festive events that will captivate visitors and dignitaries alike. The opening has gained significant attention, particularly after National Geographic named the North Dakota Badlands as one of its “Best of the World” travel destinations for 2026, spotlighting the library’s role in showcasing the complex legacy of Theodore Roosevelt.
Medora, a small tourist town with a population of just 160, is bracing for a surge of visitors. The local police and sheriff’s departments, with a combined strength of just 14 officers, are coordinating with state law enforcement to ensure the safety and smooth handling of large crowds. “We’re excited about the event for sure. It’s kind of a lifetime opportunity to be part of something this immense,” said Medora Police Chief Russel Lapp.
Authorities are also working with the U.S. Forest Service to improve emergency access routes to the library and the nearby Burning Hills Amphitheater. The construction of a new emergency path will enhance safety measures as the town prepares for an influx of visitors.
The library’s opening will follow an invitation-only celebration for VIPs, including major donors and members of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation, before the general public can access the site starting July 5. Regular admissions will commence on July 12.
Reflecting on past events, the dedication of what was then called Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park in 1949 serves as a historical benchmark. That event drew an estimated 30,000 attendees, a feat officials are keen to replicate, albeit with better crowd management this time around.
Event planners are finalizing details for the celebration, which will include a day of notable speeches and three nights of drone shows, visible across a wide area. “We think that will be a really spectacular thing to see,” said Matt Briney, chief communications officer for the library foundation.
Construction of the library, which boasts a budget of $450 million, is progressing swiftly. The 96,000-square-foot building is expected to be fully enclosed by mid-November, with interior work commencing soon after. “Everything’s on schedule,” Briney confirmed, emphasizing their commitment to a timely opening.
As excitement builds, the Medora community is readying itself for the significant impact this grand opening will have, not only on local tourism but also on the cultural landscape of North Dakota. With the eyes of the nation focused on Medora, this event is poised to be a landmark moment for the area and for the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt himself.
