Swampscott Eagle Scout Revives Historic Cannon for Memorial

URGENT UPDATE: Swampscott High School student and Eagle Scout Adrian LaPorte is in the final stages of restoring a historic cannon at Swampscott Cemetery, a project deeply rooted in honoring local history. The project, aimed at commemorating the 12 residents who lost their lives in World War I, is set for completion by February 2024, just ahead of LaPorte’s 18th birthday.

LaPorte, an avid history enthusiast, partnered with the Swampscott Conservancy and Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Gino Cresta to bring attention back to the deteriorating condition of the vintage cannon. “The main goal of the project is to commemorate the residents of Swampscott who perished in the First World War. It’s a way to give back,” LaPorte stated.

The cannon, located in the veterans plot of the cemetery, has suffered neglect for over a decade. LaPorte is applying a fresh coat of paint and replacing the damaged wheels, which are being custom-made by a vendor in Ohio. “The conditions of the cannon were very poor,” he noted, emphasizing the labor-intensive process he undertook to strip the old paint manually.

LaPorte is also preparing a plaque to accompany the cannon, detailing its history and the names of the fallen soldiers, with support from the Swampscott Rotary covering the plaque’s costs. “I think with this project specifically, people forget about history, especially with World War I. I want to share their stories,” he said.

The project is more than just restoration; it’s a community effort. “I love the work, it’s been great to interact with so many people across town,” LaPorte added. His dedication to the project reflects a strong commitment to preserving local history and ensuring that the sacrifices of those who served are not forgotten.

As the project moves towards its completion, LaPorte’s work serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of remembrance and the role of youth in community engagement. Residents are encouraged to visit Swampscott Cemetery to witness the transformation of this historic cannon, a symbol of local heritage and sacrifice.

Stay tuned for more updates as LaPorte aims to finish the project within the next month, ensuring that the stories of Swampscott’s brave soldiers are honored for generations to come.
