UPDATE: Swampscott has just allocated $140,000 for urgent repairs to its fish pier, a decision confirmed during a Select Board meeting on Wednesday night. This crucial funding comes as part of ongoing efforts to enhance safety for community members using the pier.
The Town Meeting had previously set aside $150,000 for pier improvements, and according to Community and Economic Development Director Marzie Galazka, only $10,000 was spent on camera replacements, leaving a significant portion dedicated to necessary repairs. “We received a report from Smith Marine last year detailing the conditions of the pier,” Galazka stated.
The sole bid for the project was submitted by White Marine, Inc., and Galazka revealed that discussions are underway to finalize the scope of work. “We hope to hear from the contractor by the end of this week,” she added, emphasizing the urgency to address the repairs during this construction season.
Select Board member Danielle Leonard, who serves as the liaison to the Harbor and Waterfront Advisory Committee, reassured the community that while repairs are needed, they are not classified as critical. “None of it is really critical,” Leonard said, indicating that most issues are categorized as non-urgent.
Despite the lack of immediate threats to the pier’s integrity, Galazka pointed out that the repairs include decking and support for pillars, along with fuel line repairs. “Now that we have the funds, we wanted to try and address them,” she stressed.
Chair Katie Phelan raised concerns regarding the pier’s future, noting that environmental groups have warned of potential storm surges that could further deteriorate the structure. “It will face potential storm surges in the next 10 years that could potentially demolish it,” Phelan warned.
The Select Board is set to meet with the Harbor and Waterfront Advisory Committee again to discuss feedback and further plans. The community’s previous enthusiasm for a new $5 million pier has waned, leading officials to prioritize immediate maintenance work.
