UPDATE: In a dramatic finish, the Stewartville High School boys soccer team secured a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Mounds Park Academy in the Class 1A state quarterfinal on October 24, 2023. The win propels Stewartville to the semifinals at U.S. Bank Stadium.
In a heart-stopping moment just five minutes into the second half of overtime, Cole Kropp, a finalist for Mr. Soccer, showcased his skill by beating two defenders and unleashing a left-footed shot that proved unstoppable for the MPA goalkeeper. This goal not only marked Kropp’s 29th of the season but also secured Stewartville’s place in the semifinals.
The match started with an unexpected turn as Mounds Park Academy took an early lead in the 19th minute. Wiktor Sroka initiated a brilliant play, feeding a perfect cross to Leyton Hudson, who converted with a low shot that slipped past Stewartville keeper Brecken Rester. This was only the 10th goal Stewartville had allowed all season.
Despite trailing for much of the first half, Stewartville showed resilience. The Tigers, who had only faced a deficit for a total of 15 minutes throughout the season, came out strong in the second half. Just two minutes after the break, Cody Clark scored a powerful header from a corner, leveling the match and igniting the Stewartville side.
As the game progressed, Stewartville maintained pressure on MPA’s defense, creating several scoring opportunities. MPA’s goalkeeper, Owen Johnston, made several critical saves to keep the game tied, including a crucial stop midway through the first overtime, preserving the tension.
With both teams battling hard, it seemed the game might head to a penalty shootout. However, a defensive miscue from MPA gifted the ball to Kropp in a prime position. He capitalized on the chance, netting the decisive goal and sending Stewartville to the semifinals.
The Tigers, now boasting a perfect record of 20-0, will face the winner of the upcoming quarterfinal match between St. Cloud Cathedral and Cristo Rey Jesuit on Tuesday, October 28, at 7 p.m. This victory marks a significant moment for the program, as Stewartville aims for state glory.
Stewartville’s journey continues, and fans are eager to see if this talented team can convert their momentum into a state championship. Stay tuned for more updates as the tournament unfolds.
