URGENT UPDATE: Residents of the Southeast Side of San Antonio are calling for increased police presence in their neighborhood following a shocking attempted break-in captured on home security cameras. The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 a.m. last Sunday when Harrison and Savana Yount reported a man attempting to enter their home.
The couple’s exterior cameras recorded the suspect lurking in their backyard and knocking on their back window. “Seeing it all play out was one of the creepiest things,” Savana Yount stated. “I immediately grabbed my phone and called the police.” The footage shows the man trying the back door handle before the Younts contacted 911. Shortly thereafter, police detained the suspect, who was reportedly dealing with a mental health issue, according to a San Antonio Police Department spokesperson.
As crime rates increase in the area, residents are expressing heightened anxiety. “It’s pretty scary ‘cause you never know what people are intending to do,” commented a neighbor named Amber. Gunfire has also been reported frequently, raising alarms about safety in the Southeast Side community.
Residents attribute the decline in police visibility to the closure of Kate Schenck Elementary. “There has been a lot less officers patrolling the area because the school is no longer there,” one local stated, emphasizing that police presence was more consistent when the school was in session.
In the wake of these alarming incidents, community members are taking proactive steps to enhance their safety. “We know our neighbors, we love the neighborhood,” Savana Yount remarked. “This was a huge eye-opener, kinda one of those very unexpected things.”
Authorities are now under pressure to respond to the growing demand for enhanced security measures in the Southeast Side. Residents are urging city officials to increase patrols and address the rising crime rates, emphasizing that community safety must be a priority.
As the situation develops, residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities to the police. The community’s collective action may be pivotal in fostering a safer environment.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as residents continue to advocate for increased police presence and community safety measures.
