The tournament kicked off on October 20, 2023, with Liao leading the charge for the Bulldogs. After a rocky start, where teammates Jim Ji, Krish Gupta, and Troy Kudrjavtsev struggled in singles matches against Princeton and Penn, Liao secured a critical win in straight sets, defeating Brown 6-3, 6-3. “I thought I performed well. After having a rough weekend at Regionals, I was glad I was able to bounce back,” Liao stated.
On day two, October 21, Liao continued his winning streak with a decisive victory over Princeton in a dramatic three-set match, concluding with scores of 6-7, 6-1, 6-2. His teammates also showed resilience, battling through tough matches. Despite close losses, Gupta and Ji pushed their opponents to three sets, demonstrating the team’s fighting spirit.
Day three, October 22, saw Liao dominate Penn with a 6-2, 6-4 victory, propelling him into the semifinals against Michael Zheng. While Liao put up a strong defense, he ultimately fell 6-2, 6-3. “My biggest takeaway from my performance is that I have the level and the skill to hang with the best players in the Ivy League,” he remarked after the match.
This tournament underscored the potential of Yale’s men’s tennis team, with captain Eric Li noting, “Overall the team did well. We could have executed better in singles, but we learned a lot from this weekend.” The Bulldogs’ next challenge awaits at the Georgia Tech Invitational on October 27.
