Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Declared Safe After Urgent Inspection

UPDATE: The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge has been declared in good condition following a comprehensive inspection conducted by experts from Modjeski and Masters, COWI North America, and the Great Lakes Engineering Group. This urgent announcement comes after a thorough review, which took place earlier today, highlighting the bridge’s overall structural integrity.

Brad Croop, an engineer from Modjeski and Masters, confirmed, “The bridge is in overall good condition,” despite noting typical aging issues such as corrosion and paint loss that are slated for future maintenance. The Michigan Department of Transportation emphasized the proactive measures taken to ensure public safety.

The inspection report praised the small maintenance team for their diligent work, which is commendable compared to other bridges of similar age. Karl Hansen, the International Bridge Authority (IBA) bridge engineer, stated, “Our dedicated staff ensures the safety of our customers and protects the public investment in the bridge.”

The Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Authority board has effectively addressed 77% of the recommended maintenance from previous inspections, including improvements to the green pedestrian railings and portions of the U.S. arch. Notably, an in-house epoxy overlay on the Canadian approach spans resulted in a significant cost saving of $178,459 compared to contractor estimates.

During the meeting, Linda Hoath and Natalie Kinloch were elected as chair and vice-chair for 2026, respectively. The board, comprising members from both Michigan and Ontario, has scheduled additional meetings for 2026 and will continue to share updates through its website and X platform.

This inspection is critical for the safety of all travelers using the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, a vital connection between the United States and Canada. With the board’s commitment to continuous maintenance, the bridge remains a safe passage for thousands of vehicles daily.
