BREAKING: A Sacramento man, Hamdi Bazyan, has been convicted of attempted murder and animal cruelty following a horrific attack on his parents and their family cat. The jury delivered the verdict on Thursday, confirming that Bazyan’s violent rampage in December 2021 left his family fearing for their lives.
The December 26, 2021 incident began with Bazyan’s alarming behavior, prompting his parents to call the police. However, when officers left, Bazyan escalated the situation by arming himself with three large knives and imprisoning his parents in their bedroom. He brutally assaulted them, using his fists and a cane, before turning his aggression toward the family pet, stabbing the cat nine times and attempting to asphyxiate her.
During the brutal attack, Bazyan stabbed his mother in the torso, while his father suffered multiple stab wounds while trying to shield his wife from harm.
“His mother was able to escape to a neighbor’s home to call police,”
stated the District Attorney’s Office. Upon hearing police sirens, Bazyan fled the scene but was later apprehended near the American River bridge.
Both of Bazyan’s parents survived the horrific ordeal thanks to life-saving aid after his mother’s desperate escape, and remarkably, the family cat also survived. The jury found Bazyan guilty on multiple charges: two counts of attempted murder, one count of animal cruelty, two counts of false imprisonment, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, along with allegations of causing great bodily injury and personal use of a knife.
Deputy District Attorney Alexandra James from the Elder Abuse Unit highlighted the gravity of the case, noting the profound impact on the victims. Bazyan now faces a significant prison sentence, with sentencing scheduled for a later date as officials assess the full extent of his actions.
This shocking case underscores the urgent need for awareness regarding domestic violence and animal cruelty, and the community is left to grapple with the aftermath of such a violent act. The survivors are working to heal, while authorities continue to stress the importance of reporting erratic behavior before it leads to tragedy.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as the sentencing date approaches.
