URGENT UPDATE: Residents in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia are on high alert as they suspect they are victims of a disturbing TikTok scam. Since September 2023, at least 20 young women have unexpectedly knocked on doors, seeking hair appointments that were supposedly scheduled through a TikTok account called “Nariah the Hairstylist.”
Local resident Jearold Hersey expressed his concerns, stating, “Mostly concerned for safety. My family is here. This is freaking my son out.” Hersey revealed that the women who arrived at his home claimed they were given his address after sending a $25 deposit via Cash App to the TikTok account creator.
“It’s kind of nerve-racking because you don’t really know who is coming to the door,” Hersey added. Disturbingly, the address provided to these women led them directly to Hersey’s home and those of his neighbors.
In response to the alarming situation, residents have posted warnings on their doors, cautioning women that their addresses have been exploited for an online scam. “Sometimes people see the sign and go away, and sometimes people bang on the door and they’re yelling in front of their door, or they just don’t leave,” Hersey explained, highlighting the growing anxiety among local families.
Action News attempted to reach the TikTok account associated with this scheme. When contacted, the individual stated she would send the location after receiving the payment but abruptly hung up when questioned about the alleged scam.
Hersey is determined to raise awareness. “I really want them to get caught in all honesty,” he said. “This isn’t cool. It’s not fair to the people, not just the people who are getting ripped off for money; we feel unsafe as well.”
Philadelphia police are actively investigating the situation and advise anyone who has been affected to file a police report. Residents remain vigilant as officials work to put an end to this unsettling trend, urging the community to stay informed and cautious.
With the potential for more victims, this developing story underscores the urgent need for awareness of online scams that can prey on vulnerable individuals. Stay tuned for updates as authorities continue their investigation.
